California Tour: March 27-28-29
2009 La Ventana expo
2009 La Ventana kite expo
The 2009 La Ventana trip started out in San Jose Del Cabo at the airport. Dale Johnson the Eclipse NW rep, Matt Thames Eclipse team rider and Timo Ertz another Eclipse rider arrived to find nice warm a sunny conditions, after getting the rental truck taken care of we proceeded up Mexico Hwy 1 on our way to La Paz to pick up Eclipseʼs own Dimitri Maramenides, He flew from the airport. Negotiating rush hour traffic in La Paz was a experience of its own!
We arrived in La Ventana once again in the dark, There we found our rental house and met up with Gabe Brown the Eclipse California Rep and his Girl friend. All of the crew
was anxious to get on the water!
Morning one found us with great weather but no wind, we set up our booth matt, me and Timo pumped up the kites and finished the display.
Dimitri was shaking hands and kissing babies spreading the stoke of kiteboarding and Eclipse! Matt threw up a Thruster 12m desperately seeking wind but it was not to be,
The three of us answered questions and spread the hype. That night after dinner Dimitri and I went and hung out with a large group from San Fran--the third Ave crew, great group! Great vibe!
Morning Two again gave us a great day with a gentle breeze. Matt, Me set up the kites and booth again and Dimitri jumped on a stand up paddle board entering the race which had started prior to us getting to the beach, he started a couple of hundred yards behind and ended up finishing in the top half after passing many. The wind did finally come up a little but very weak at the event site, the wind apeared stronger up by our house wich was about four miles north so me Matt and Timo loaded up as well as Gabe and his girl friend and went up to the house, we grabed some of the third ave crew as well as Stringy the photo expert. We went with the idea that we were going to ride down to the event site and have a cool photo op witht the new kites, but this is a wind sport and it was not to be we had to swim to shore about a mile fro the event site and walk the walk of shame! but it was water time and the kites are looking sick! The day finished again with questions and answers, lots of interest just no wind at the event site.
Morning three was another stellar day me and timo dropped Dimitri and Matt off at 07:30 so they could board the pongas and go over to the island to compete in the crossing! Timo and I then went back to the house and did a little computer work followed by a great breakfast and then a cool thing happened! we noticed a wind line appearing across the bay, We finished eating and rushed down to the event site, we were about a hour early so we set everything up and went out kiting, perfect 10m wind and because the bulk of the people were either on the island or still asleep we had the by to our selves shared with a few other reps and various people. By the time we had a stellar session people were starting to arrive to the demo so we started doing demos of the kites we had! Finally this is what we came for!
The crossing did not start until late afternoon due to the wind not filling in on the island side, but then as riders started we waited for our crew, Gabe was the first Eclipse rider across followed soon by Dimiti and then Matt, three tired guys! Me, Matt and Dimitri finished the demo detail for the day very tired! This was a very success full day, we got a lot of people on the kites, a lot of Thruster and Kima demos, We only had the 11m Nano on the windy day and it was to big so not a lot of feedback on it. After dinner Dimitri and I had a invitation to play ping pong with the third ave crew, what a great way to finish the day.
Morning four was a rather hot morning, again Matt, me and Timo set up the demo, it was a rushed day the wind came up and a few people went out but the wind never really came up strong, they tried to run a comp with no luck. When three o'clock rolled around I took Dimitri to La Paz to catch his flight leaving the demo with Matt and Timo. So I was solo for the trip, kind of exciting when I took a wrong turn with no navigator! When I got back Matt and Timo had packed up the gear and were ready to go to dinner, we had our last dinner in Baja and reflected on what a great time that was had by all! The last morning was a relaxing morning breakfast packing and me and Matt were on our way back to the airport, leaving Timo who was staying for another two weeks!!!!!!! On the way out of town we stopped to say good by to the third ave crew and ended up selling a 12m Thruster to one of the guys!
What a great trip, lots of new contacts, new and old friends!
I can not wait for next year!
PS: Arrived back in the NW to some snow!
